You can’t wait for inspiration to begin creating—inspiration has to find you working. Jake and Hannah explore why discipline comes first, how consistent practice creates the conditions for inspiration to strike, and why protecting your imagination from constant noise and consumption gives creativity room to flourish.
Where do good ideas actually come from—and what do you do when inspiration doesn’t strike? In this episode of Made to Last, Jake and Hannah explore the relationship between inspiration and discipline, including how Jake continues to create when he doesn’t feel particularly inspired. They talk about the sources that feed their own creativity—from beauty, books, history, faith, and nature to family life and the unexpected inspiration found in raising children. Together, they consider what it takes to protect your imagination in an overstimulated world and why boredom and empty space may be more essential to creativity than we realize. They also examine the role of technology in the creative life, asking when it serves our imagination—and when constant consumption begins to steal from it. In this week’s Put It to Work challenge, create one hour of intentional emptiness—no phone, podcast, music, or outside input—and simply walk, sit, sketch, write, pray, or pay attention to what surfaces when you finally make room for inspiration.
